Biodiversity Datafication for
Collaborative Citymaking

Vienna, Austria

2021 — 2022

This workshop is part of the PROVIDEDH project in the division of exploratory citizen science with the participation of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Harvard Metalab, and the research and arts community of  Vienna. The goal of this workshop is to critically explore the role of datafication of biodiversity in the city context by repurposing databases. Clarify human-made and computer-made inconcistencies in data, and shift algorithms from an inventory perspective to a dialogue on biodiversity, the city, and personal narratives.

Duration: 2.5 hours

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify people mental models in biodiversity data collection and the gaps in compelling an experience on biodiversity and the city.

  • A sensorial experience that repurposes data from an inventory perspective to a dialogue on biodiversity, the city, and personal experience.

  • A novel approach in the design of algorithms processes, based on new understandings, scenarios, uncertainty, and principles of care in data collection

  • To develop and design mechanisms for collaborative and public deliberation on data collection and use.
